Aces Series: “LIVE BAIT” – CAPT. Clayton "KELLY" Gross
Captain Clayton “Kelly” Gross – WWII Ace of the 354th Fighter Group
Captain Clayton "Kelly" Gross was a decorated World War II fighter ace and a proud member of the famed 354th Fighter Group—the "Pioneer Mustang Group." Flying first the P-51 Mustang and later the P-47 Thunderbolt, Gross earned a fearsome reputation in the skies over Europe with six confirmed air-to-air victories to his name.
A natural aviator with nerves of steel, Gross flew his P-51D Mustang, aptly named Live Bait, on dangerous bomber escort and ground attack missions across enemy territory. The aircraft bore its name as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the high-risk role of early Mustang pilots drawing fire to protect bomber formations. Gross rose to the challenge, demonstrating both courage and skill under fire.
The 354th Fighter Group, activated in 1942 and deployed to England in late 1943, was the first unit to fly the long-range P-51 Mustang in combat. As part of the 9th Air Force, the group played a critical role in achieving air superiority during the Normandy invasion and deep-penetration raids over Germany. Gross’s leadership and combat achievements contributed to the group’s distinguished legacy, which includes more than 800 enemy aircraft destroyed.
Captain Gross continued to serve with distinction throughout the war, embodying the fearless spirit of American fighter pilots. His legacy lives on as a symbol of bravery, grit, and the relentless pursuit of air superiority in the face of overwhelming odds.
